On May 21, 1943 Captain Archie Donahue became an ‘ace in a day’ by shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in one mission. He would repeat this feat 2 years later while serving aboard the USS Bunker Hill.

Jim Swett earned the Medal of Honor for destroying seven Japanese aircraft in one air combat action, on 7 April, 1943, while serving with VMF-221 on Guadalcanal. He later transitioned from the F4F to the F4U Corsair and served a highly successful tour on the USS Bunker Hill in 1945, adding 10.5 more confirmed aerial victories to his score.
