The USS Nevada, moored by herself, escaped the intial attack on Pearl harbor, however, as she gathered steam and made her way for the open sea, she took a torpedo in her bow which opened a hole and flooded her forward compartments. As the Nevada steamed toward the main  channel she came under heavy attack. On fire, full of holes, and with her bow low in the water, her Captain steered her into a beach at Hospital Point to avoid having the ship sink in the main channel and block the only passage to sea.

In this painting by Robert Taylor we see Aichi D-3A1 dive bombers from the second wave of aircraft attacking the Nevada just after 9:00 am, as she sits aground at Hospital Point.
