n the Summer of 1940 the Germans had 3000 aircraft and a plan to annihilate the RAF and make Britain theirs, completing their conquest of Europe. The British had 600 Spitfire and Hurricane fighters and the determination to remain free.
What then played out in skies over England and above the English Channel remains one of the greatest aerial conflicts of all time, and is one more example of a strength of will defeating a strength of numbers.
In this print, Taylor's first in his Battle of Britain Millennium Trilogy, a Mk I Spitfire from No. 66 Squadron roars over the crashed remains of a Heinkel 111 whose crew is emerging onto the bright English countryside unhurt, but never to fight again. In the back ground Hurricanes from No. 56 Squadron race home to North Weald for more petrol and armament - they may fly as many as 6 sorties before the day is through. High above, vapor trails crisscross the sky as defender and aggressor clash in the cold sky over England.

"Defiant to the Last" companion print included with Millennium Proof series prints. Print measures 18.5" x 13.25'.

Each copy of "Fight for the Sky" in the Millennium Proof series comes with a matching-numbered companion print, "Defiant to the Last". The aircrews which took to the sky in the Defiant, with its four turret mounted .303 machine guns, were no match for the swift fighters of the Luftwaffe, but they fought on despite appalling losses. "Defiant to the Last" is signed by two Defiant aircrew, including Fred Barker, the top-scoring Defiant gunner.
