RIVETING IMAGES Presents

In a tense moment, the Space Shuttle is released from its highly modified 747 carrier for an approach and landing test at Edwards Air Force Base. Unlike previous flight tests, this was the first one without an aerodynamic tail cone installed on the Shuttle, simulating an actual descent and recovery.
At 20,300 feet, shuttle pilot Joe Engle released the shuttle and NASA pilot Fitz Fulton banked the 747 away from the orbiter. 2 Minutes and 34 seconds later the shuttle was on the ground, nearly three minutes faster than prior flights with the tail cone installed, illustrating just how great the drag was with the orbiter's rocket nozzles exposed.

This print is signed by Shuttle pilot Major General Joe H. Engle and Shuttle Carrier pilot Fitzhugh L. "Fitz" Fulton.
