Boeing test pilot Edmund T. Allen died trying to nurse the burning B-29 prototype back to base so the cause of the problem could be determined. In his honor the employees of Boeing's Wichita plant paid for a B-29 through donations and gave it to the USAAF. The B-29 "Eddie Allen" lived up to its name, flying 24 combat missions before being damaged so badly it barely made it back to its Tinian Island base. The aircraft never flew again.
