For nearly a quarter century, Lockheed's SR-71 Blackbird flew highly-classified missions all over the world, gathering crucial intelligence for U.S. operations. Each highly-trained crew of two, consiisting of Pilot and Reconnaissance Systems Officer (RSO), geared up in pressure suits like those of astronauts, would routinely fly into harm's way at well over Mach 3 into hostile environs over 80,000 feet, as the aircraft surface temperature soared to nearly 600 degrees. Despite the high risks involved, no SR-71 was ever lost to enemy action, nor was any Air Force crewmember ever killed due to a mishap. Only an elite handful of these specialists ever had the honor of flying Lockheed's sinister-looking jewel, especially on operational missions, from which they'd earn the privilege of donning the highly-coveted "HABU" patch.
