In this painting Medal of Honor recipient Captain David McCampbell departs the USS Essex during the Marianas Turkey Shoot. During this battle the US Navy imparted horrific losses on the air forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Captain David McCampbell has the destinction of being the US Navy's highest scoring Ace, with 34 victories. On October 24, 1944 McCampbell and his flkight of 7 Hellcats encountered more than 50 Japanese aircraft. McCampbell personally shot down 9 aircraft in the ensuing battle and was presented the Medal of Honor by FDR.
